In business, those who struggle usually do so because of the lack of confidence in themselves. Self-confidence is the difference between feeling unstoppable and feeling scared out of your mind. Your perception of yourself has an enormous impact on how others perceive you. Building your self-confidence is the first step to success.
There are a number of things you can consciously do to build your self-confidence. By using these 10 strategies, you can become the confident successful person you were meant to be.
1. Practice Good Posture
The way a person carries himself or herself tells you a lot about them. It also affects how you feel about your self. If you have slumped shoulders and slow movements, you display a lack of self-confidence. Poor posture causes fatigue and strain on your body’s ligaments and muscles. Slouching can deepen depression and stress you out. By practicing good posture, you’ll automatically feel more confident. Good posture reduces stress and strain on your spin and body, making your body “feel” good. And if your body feels good, you feel good.
2. Put a Pep in Your Step
People with confidence walk quickly. They have places to go, people see and things to do. Walking 25% faster will make you look and feel more important. Walking faster gives you more energy and makes you feel purposeful.
Tips to help you walk faster: Stand tall, focus on quicker, not longer steps, bed your arms and push off of your toes.
3. Make a Personal Commercial
One of the best ways to build self-confidence is to write down your strengths and goals. Create a personal commercial for yourself highlight these strengths and goals. It should be about 30-60 seconds. Then every morning recite this commercial out loud in front of a mirror. When you speak out loud and to yourself, you speak it into existence. When you speak it into existence it becomes apart of your being. Your being affects the way you think, how you feel about yourself and the things you do.
4. Guard Your Circle of Influence
The people you surround yourself with greatly influence you in business and in life. Remember, you become like the 5 people you hang around the most. They can either boost your confidence or steal your confidence. Surround yourself with positive people. Positive people can boost your confidence by 1000%. The make you want to do better, be better and go after your dreams.
5. Compliment Other People
When we think negatively about ourselves, we often project that feeling onto others. Whatever you put into the universe, you get it back 10 fold. To break this cycle of negativity, get in the habit of praising other people. Make a conscious effort to compliment those around you. In the process, you’ll become well liked and build self-confidence. By looking for the best in others, you’ll bring out the best in yourself.
6. Work Out
Personal appearance and physical fitness have a huge effect on self-confidence. When you don’t look good or you’re out of shape, you feel insecure, unattractive and less energetic. But that doesn’t mean you have to vigorously work out an hour everyday of the week. Walking at a brisk pace 15 minutes a day or every other day increases blood flow and releases endorphins. Endorphins trigger a positive feeling in the body. Giving you a positive and energizing outlook on life.
7. Gratitude
When you focus too much on what you don’t have, you tend to dwell on your weaknesses and why you can’t get them. The best way to avoid this is to appreciate what you already have. Set aside time each day to mentally list everything you have to be grateful for. Recall your past successes, your unique skills and positive momentum. You’ll be amazed at how much you have going for you. This will motivate you to take the next steps towards success and reach your goals.
8. Make Goal Posters
When you dream big, life is more exciting. Get a poster board and glue on pictures of places you want to go, the house you want to live in, the car you want to drive, how much money you want to make, etc. Be willing to be bold and dream big. Goal posters help you vividly see what you are working towards. The direction you are moving toward in life is more important than where you happen to be standing at the moment. Place your goal poster where you can see it everyday. It will reinforce what you are moving towards, which will boost your self-confidence tremendously.
9. Study What You Don’t Know
Nothing can zap your self-confidence more than lack of knowledge or experience. It makes you unsure of yourself and self-doubt starts to creep in. Not knowing is the beginning of true knowledge. Love the uncertainty, and learn like an eager beaver. Study 3 people who are leading in that arena, watch videos, read blog posts, etc. Once you’ve studied, actually do it. Finally, analyze all failures and repeat. If you don’t know how to create a Facebook ad, watch training, then create an ad based on what you learned. If the ad gets approved, great. If it doesn’t get approved, study and do it again. Keep doing it until you become proficient. Obtaining knowledge or learning a new skill is the ultimate form of self-confidence.
10. Focus on Contribution
Too often we think too much about what we want. We tend to focus too much on ourselves and not enough on the needs of other people. When you focus on the needs of others, you think less about your own flaws. There is nothing more meaningful and rewarding than contributing to the world. Contributing gives you a sense of purpose. It forces you to examine your self and build on your strengths. As a result, you’ll be rewarded with personal success.
