HAL ELROD’S STORYHow One Guy Overcame Death (literally), Cancer and the Economic Crash to Change Thousands of Lives
What’s the definition of rock bottom?
Hal Elrod has a great one. He describes it as “Any moment of experience, or adversity, that is beyond anything you've ever experienced before."
Of course rock bottom is relative to each and every individual.
In other words, what you think of rock bottom may not seem like rock bottom at all to others, but when you’re going through it, it feels like the hardest thing ever.
Hal Elrod gives an example of when he was in grade school and broke up with his girlfriend of two long weeks. May seem silly now, but that was rock bottom for his young self.
Hal had three instances of rock bottom that are hard to deny as anything but valid rock bottom.
Rock Bottom #1: A Horrible Car Accident at Age 20!
His first rock bottom occurred at just age 20. As a top cutlery sales rep for a marketing company called Cutco, Hal not surprisingly, was one of their top sales reps.
One evening after giving the best speech of his life (at the time) at one of their big sales conferences, driving down the freeway at 70 miles per hour in his first brand new car, Hal was hit head on by a drunk driver who was driving on the wrong side of the road... also doing 70+ miles per hour. .
As if that's not bad enough, his car spun around and the car behind him T-Boned his car, and hit his driver side door (where he was sitting) at 70 miles per hour... totally destroying his entire left side.
He broke 11 bones, and died for 6 minutes, only to be brought back to life en-route to the hospital. He came out of a coma 6 days later, and was told he had brain damage, would never be the same again, or walk again.
Oddly Hal was in such a positive mindset during recovery that the doctors actually told his parents that he must be in denial.
However he was just genuinely grateful for everything he'd already had, and had accepted the fact that he may never walk again. Only a week later the doctors told him that they couldn’t explain it, but he was healing so fast that he was ready to take his first step.
Rock Bottom #2: Economic Crash of 2008
As most know, in 2008 the economy crashed.
Hal’s coaching business crashed right along with it! After about 6 months of a downward spiral, Hal began to wonder what he was missing. What were the things that the most successful people in the world were doing, that he was NOT doing?
Rock Bottom #3: A Rare Form of Cancer With Only a 20% to 30% Chance of Survival
About a year and half ago, Hal woke up having trouble breathing. After many tests, doctors visits, and 3 different hospitals, they confirmed he had a very rare and aggressive form of cancer.
At this point he's 38 years old, and is the healthiest person you could meet. Plant based diet, occasional grass fed meats, and he even used shampoo with zero chemicals. He was basically OCD with his health.
At diagnosis he was given a 20% to 30% chance of surviving.
However in his mind, a 20% of survival rate meant 100% survival rate .
As you would think, Hal said it was terrifying at times. But 95% of his focused energy, was surviving and living to 100 years old. Affirmations, acupuncture, ozone therapy, he did everything he could outside of what his doctors told him to do (in combination of what his doctors told him to do!)
As of a few months ago, he's cancer free and in remission.

When the economy crashed in 2008, Hal actually was in denial about how this crash would affect his finances.
He didn’t see himself as part of the system or in the matrix. However his clients lost their clients, and couldn't pay Hal!
This caused a 6 month downward spiral.
At the time he was a success coach, and was understandingly experiencing an identity crisis, because he was failing miserably, yet trying to sell people on hiring him to help them be successful.
He felt like a fraud.
The Miracle Morning

His response was basically “I hate running, what else can I do?”
The friend’s answer to that was quite simple but profound. He asked Hal: “What do you hate worse, running or your circumstances?"
Hal was also encouraged to listen to self help or business audio on his run. This way he’s learning WHILE in a peak state. This would basically allow him to run home and immediately apply what he’d learned while in that state.
On his very first run Hal listened to an audio from Jim Rohn.
Within the first couple of minutes Jim Rohn said something that changed his entire life forever...
It was the quote that became the basis of "The Miracle Morning".
"Your level of success will seldom exceed your level of personal development, because success is something you attract by the person that you become."
(You may want to do yourself a favor and write that quote down, and tape it somewhere you can see every single day!)
On the level of success, we all want to be at 10. (Health, relationships, happiness, spirituality, success in business, etc). He realized he wanted his success at 10, but his level of self development was at a 2. That was a disconnect for not just him, but for the world.
The idea is simple...
If you dedicate consistent, focused time on your personal development, then day by day you become a better person than you were the day before. As you become level 5 you achieve level 5 success, and as you become a level 10 person, level 10 success meets you dead on.
He went and started look at what the world's most successful people do for self development... and in his exhaustive research came across the 6 practices that the world's most successful people for centuries have been using.

S = SILENCE (Meditation and/or Prayer)

A = Affirmations
Affirmations are a big part of the Miracle Morning. But Hal Elrod has a different way of doing them than you’ve likely heard before. You can hear his take on the old way of doing affirmations in the next video below, but Hal’s way looks more like this...
"I am committed to ______ result by ______ date, and I will commit to take these action steps to achieve them for _______ days, no matter what."
It's an affirmation that's rooted in truth, is aspirational, and keeps you focused on what matters in your life.
V = Visualization
The world's best athletes are famous for utilizing visualization to perform at their best, so why wouldn't you or I?
Visualization is an important part of what we teach here at MLSP, and has been a coveted strategy by many of the most successful humans in the world.
E = Exercise
Exercise gets the blood pumping through your veins and up into your brain.
It doesn’t have to too much either. You just need at least 1 minute (preferably 5 to 10 minutes) of stretching, jumping jacks, etc. Anything that gets the blood pumping.
If all you do is 60 seconds of jumping jacks, it will bump up your energy level significantly!
R = Reading
We're all only one book away from learning the strategy or get the knowledge we need to radically change our life.
It’s very simple. Pick an area of your life where you want to get better, find an expert on that subject, and start reading 5 to 10 pages of their books every single morning. Simple, takes about 10 minutes, but will change your life!
S = Scribing (a Fancy Word for Writing)
Journal everyday. The power of putting pen to paper, articulating your gratitude and/or your highest priorities in writing gets you crystal clear on your current state of life.
How do you journal?
Don’t overcomplicate it.
Here’s the quick and simple journaling strategy that Hal Elrod uses:
- Writer down 3 things you’re grateful for.
- Then write down the 3 most important results you're committing to work on that day. (What are the 3 things on your big to-do list, that will allow you to move the needle most TODAY?)

Hal Elrod's Personal Meditation Practice
As a huge proponent of meditation, and someone who uses it daily, MLSP CEO Brian Fanale was very interested in Hal’s form of meditation, and asked him to describe it.
Hal had explored and researched many different types of meditation.
In essence, he basically developed his own meditation method that works for him because it’s action oriented just like he is.
His favorite type of meditation is to simply choose a general subject (could be something you're working on right now, or what you want to strengthen in your life). And then you strive to not think about that subject.
Sounds weird right? But it works like gangbusters to come up with amazing ideas.
Here’s how you put this to work....
- The idea is to bring your topic to your meditation as a raw intention.
- He then imagines this topic seeping from his brain down into to his heart or "soul", and let’s it sit there while he just meditates in silence.
- During this time, ideas will come to mind about his topic, and he’ll go ahead, will pause his meditation timer, and jot down the ideas that came to him.
Again, Hal is an action oriented guy and therefore prefers a productive meditation that will move him forward!

What If You Don't Feel Like You Have TIME To Do the 6 Steps of the Miracle Morning?
Not a morning person? You’re certainly not alone as you’ll soon see.
When Hal first got started, the biggest two concerns that he had was WHAT would he do, and WHEN would he do them.
In the beginning, he wasn't sure which of the practices he should do. Which ones were the best practices out of six?
He quickly realized that none of them were the best. They were all equally the best among the most successful people.
Then he simply had to figure out when? He wasn't a morning person, and didn't feel like he had time.
Then Hal heard a voice in his head from one of his mentors with a quote you may need to ask yourself right now...
"If you want your life to be different, you have to be willing to do something different first"
He decided right then and there that he had to do it, and schedule it for his mornings.
Two Things to Think About if Your Think You're Not a Morning Person
First: Saying You’re Not a Morning Person Is a Limiting Belief!
You're not born inherently one or the other.
Here’s a great example and proof that this is true: If you don't run, you're not a runner. But if you start running, you become a RUNNER! (You probably knew we would say that!)
The same thing works for mornings. If you don't wake up early, you're not a morning person. If you start getting up at 5am, your body acclimates, and you transition into...wait for it... a morning person!
Makes sense right?
Second: An Interesting Survey of the Miracle Morning Community
Hal took a survey in his massive community to ask “What percentage of the hundreds of thousands of people in the Miracle Morning community, who started doing the daily practices, were already morning people before they began?”
72% said that they had never... in their entire lives... been a morning person!
